Woman on Top

Research shows that more and more women are holding top positions in all fields . In 2009 , women held 13.5% of fortune 500 executive officer positions and this number grew to 14.6% in 2013.

The ratios may gradually balance out but the fact the women are from Venus and men from Mars cannot change! So how does a woman boss fare as compared to a male boss?

Research shows that women bosses are:

  • Very emotional about their work - they take success and failure too much to heart on a day to day basis and therefore stress out too much

  • They are perfectionists - they like zero error and will not settle for less therefore can be hard on their subordinates

  • They are not very comfortable with giving a free hand to their subordinates

  • They are not very trusting of their bosses

  • They tend to work harder as subconsciously they are always conscious of the male competition

  • Are not very authoritative

  • Are not fast at taking decisions

Well from personal experience, I have had women bosses with those characteristics but I dont think its good to generalize. But honestly, till now I have had a better experience with male bosses and as a boss myself , I work on not showing these characteristics to the extreme.

I agree with the findings. Women are really much more sensitive than men. It works both ways, though. It can both be good and bad. Good because a woman can easily read between the lines and understand circumstances(usually) of their subordinates. I still find it less stressful to work for a male boss, though.

While generalizing is definitely not good, women, I believe make better team leaders. Good to know about this research :)

I haven't had a female boss but I've seen how they become too bossy because my parent's boss is a female and she really fits the description. I kind of actually now understood why she's such an annoying person haha! But yes, I think she acts the way she does for a reason.

You are right and the information you have post is great. Woman can run any organizations, clubs, institutions better than man as they want their work to be done excellently.

Yes, that's right-not good to generalize at all. I've experienced having great female and male bosses, and also the opposite for both sexes. It really depends on the character and principles of the person, may it be a she or a he:)

I have high regards for women bosses. I've had a lot of women bosses and all of them are people I look up to. And now that I'm one, I'm not anything like item #2 on your list :)

I prefer working with male clients simply because many female clients are too aggressive and un-trusting that we can do what they hire us to do.

Having said that, I've also experienced working with female clients who were a delight to work for. :)

Girls rule! Boys drool! :) haha..well there goes gender equality.

I won't generalised. But I prefer male bosses, even when I'm a girl myself. When I'm the boss myself, I realised I tend to be overly strict and I was working with my ex back then, and we balanced up well...

I agree with you !! I wont say that women are better than men but finally they get what they deserve. From the history women are underestimated. Now its the time t show what they deserve !

I think maybe females bosses may have to act bossier to prove themselves capable to handling situations. It is an adjustment they have to make to get their employees in line, especially the males.

It's funny but my eleven year old daughter asked me the other day if women and men were paid equally. I said the gap was closing, but this shows it is not as much as we think..

I think women are more detail oriented compared to the male counterparts. They would also be more subjective with their decisions.

I guess it really depends but true, women are pretty sensitive hehe but but more organized and very detailed oriented :)

OMG! I keep submitting my comment on your contact form. Consider moving it Loudthinkin, the location is a bit confusing.
Anyway, I agree to some extent that female bosses can be tougher. Maybe we've been told too many times to toughen up and so we do. Interestingly, I've had better female bosses.

Maybe I am a little bit old-fashioned but I believe that women's primary role is that of a mother and a wife. Then a woman can puruse a career, first comes her duties as a supporter of the family. Yet, it is true women are successful leaders as well.
