India's beautiful valley in strife!

India's beautiful valley of Kashmir has been in strife for a long time now. Almost a 100 years before India got its independence from British raj in the year 1947, the autonomous princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was created.  At that time, although this state was a Muslim dominated state, it's ruler Gulab Singh was a hindu.

He was succeeded by Maharaja Hari Singh who belonged to the Hindu Dogra dynasty and was considered to be partial to the Muslim population and largely kept them illiterate, poor and feebly represented in the state assembly. The unrest among the people of the state grew but their attempts at revolt were brutally crushed by the state forces. However the rebellion to end the autocratic rule grew continously and following Indian independence the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir acceded the state to India.

Pakistan did not accepted this accession and the first war between India and Pakistan took place in 1947-1948. Since then the region has been in conflict with Indian authorities trying to maintain peace while insurgents and militancy trying to create unrest.

With public sentiment flying high in the region a number of hindu settlers of the region had to flee fearing for their lives.

Due to the ongoing unrest in the region, development, industrialization, tourism have taken a hit. I for one have not visited the region as for long as I remember it was not safe to be there but people who have had the good fortune to be there in more peaceful times cannot stop raving about the beauty of the valley. It a shame that a resolution had not been reached in over so many years and people suffer!

This year the region saw another problem crop up and this time it was not man made. The worst ever floods in Kashmir' s history ravaged the region. Near about 500 people lost their lives and a number of villages were completely washed away forcing nearly 700,000 people to leave their homes.

The suffering continues... It is as if God is raging his fury at the man made conflict and stubburness of humans..Prayers for the people in the valley.

I made my contribution towards the relief fund , so can you. Every bit is useful..
Link is mentioned below..donation towards relief fund

Flooding hitted in nepal and lost many of their lives and homes. The relief activities seemed not much effective to allocated the suffering person in which most of the collected fund have been not targeted enough to the concerned flood victims. These problem might hit to the concerned flood victims in india also.

I travelled to Kashmir in the 90's when it was still an area of war. Such a very beautiful area with the mountains a backdrop to the lake. I am glad that the war is over now but sorry to hear about the new problems.

I'm confused how the photos are irrelevant to your text... But war is where human are wiped out like pesticides to ants and cockroaches. Innocent lives lost, but the world continues moving. Sad but helpless...

Feel pity for those who lost their loved ones. Nature has its way of balancing itself. We cannot predict it and it happens anytime. Hope settlers will be okay soon.

This is a biggest disaster in the Jammu Kashmir history. Jammu is not affected too much but kashmir is very much. It will take years to rebuild the infrastructure again. Every hand is helping in this disaster time, hope their suffer may come down soon

My first and only love so far was from Jammu, so I feel rather nostalgic reading this post. I remember how I discovered Jammu through the recordings that Vishal sent me. Jammu and Kashmir have divine beauty.

The unrest can really dampen a place development. Flooding can also be damaging.

It's really sad to see so many negative things happening, be it natural disaster or man-caused wars. Will pray for the people there.

Kashmir is one of the most elite places in the World. The natural beauty and the awesomeness of the place makes it a point of disorder between India and Pakistan. Recent flood hits in the place has made condition even worse. God bless and may they recover soon.

What is the cause of the intense flooding? Was there a storm? We have not heard about this news in the mainstream media. - Fred

I;ve got to live those two photos at the start of this post. Kinda reminds me of an Alpine-like atmosphere. But it's unfortunate things like climatic disasters really happen and for instances, we can blame it on the so-called "over-development."

It's very disheartening to read stuff like this about beautiful terrain... Sadly, we can't stop wars and Mother nature's fury. So sad...
