Today , India celebrates its 68th independence day. This day is a national holiday in India and commemorates India gaining its freedom from over 100 years of occupation by Kingdom of Great Britain.
On this very day in the year 1947 India's first Prime Minister , Jawaharlal Nehru, gave a soul stirring speech with inspiring words which have been repeated and remembered each year since then..excerpts from that speech..
'Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity'.
Independence in its true sense is personified by the Indian setup, where there is freedom of speech, religion, expression, justice for all , equal oppurtunity, freedom of choices including choosing of the government.
Many have questioned whether independence today is just a mere word and without the power of money or connections nothing much can be achieved. Yes, India today remains divided over issues like religions, castes, rich and poor . These are the deep rooted ills which can only be wiped out slowly and steadily but we cannot overlook the fact that significant improvements have taken place during these 68 years of independence.
This is a country which has given an opportunity to an ordinary Indian man from a poor family to carry the dream to lead the country merely based on his merit and hard work. Today , our Prime Minist has come a long way from being a worker at a tea stall to giving the Prime Minister's speech at the Red Fort! What better example can there be of Independence and the opportunities it offers ?
Nothing better than listening to inspiring and partriotic words from a leader you can look up to! Hoping for better days for India.
Also, celebrating my own independence by gifting myself a lazyboy :)

I think Narendra Modi had some bright ideas for improving the Indian social system and other reformation strategies But it is not only up to him. Unfortunately, the other political leaders prevent the prime minister from accomplishing his brave goals for India. My question is Is India really independent now?
